Frequently asked questions

What does French size mean on a catheter?

French (Fr) is the outer diameter of a catheter or tube: 1 Fr equals 1/3 mm, so a 10 Fr drain is about 3.3 mm across and a 14 Fr drain about 4.7 mm. Larger sizes drain thick fluid such as pus or blood better; smaller sizes are more comfortable.

What is a locking pigtail catheter?

A drainage catheter whose tip curls into a loop (the pigtail) that is held in shape by pulling an internal string, which helps keep the catheter from slipping out of the kidney, bile ducts or a collection.

Is a nephrostomy tube the same as a nephrostomy catheter?

Yes. A nephrostomy tube is a drainage catheter placed through the skin into the kidney, usually 8 to 12 Fr with a locking pigtail. Filter this page by Nephrostomy to see the options.

What is a biliary drain?

A catheter placed through the skin and liver into the bile ducts to drain blocked bile, either externally into a bag or internally into the bowel (internal-external drain). Common sizes are 8 to 12 Fr.

How many drainage catheters are listed?

We list 146 product lines of drainage catheters registered with the FDA, from manufacturers including Olympus Medical Systems Corp., Uresil, LLC, Leo Medical Co., Ltd., Cook Incorporated, Mermaid Medical A/S.

How do I buy drainage catheters outside the United States?

Open a product and use Where to buy: it lists the manufacturer's website, contact and distributor pages and any reps who cover your country. Approvals such as the CE mark vary by country, so confirm availability with the manufacturer.

Where do these sizes come from?

From the FDA Global Unique Device Identification Database, which lists every model and its labeled sizes. Attributes such as coating or covering come from the FDA text, the manufacturer's own pages, or the manufacturer directly; always confirm with the instructions for use.

Is something missing or wrong?

Manufacturers can correct their products by claiming their company page. Anyone can send a sourcing request and we will look into it.

Sizes from the FDA Global Unique Device Identification Database (GUDID). Always confirm sizes, compatibility and approval in your country with the manufacturer's instructions for use.
