Frequently asked questions

What do 0.014, 0.018 and 0.035 mean on a guidewire?

They are the wire diameter in inches. 0.035 and 0.038 inch wires are standard for most body and peripheral work; 0.014 and 0.018 inch wires are used in small vessels, below the knee, in the brain and heart, and through microcatheters.

What is a hydrophilic guidewire?

A wire with a coating that becomes very slippery when wet, which helps cross tight or tortuous segments. It must be kept wet and handled carefully because it can pass where it should not, for example under the vessel lining.

What is a stiff guidewire used for?

Extra stiff wires such as the Amplatz type support sheaths, stents and other large devices once access is established. They are not used to steer through vessels.

What is a floppy tip?

The soft distal segment of a wire. A longer floppy tip is gentler and safer to lead with; a shorter one transmits more push and torque. Not every manufacturer lists tip length in the FDA database.

How many long floppy tip guidewires are listed?

We list 4 product lines of long floppy tip guidewires registered with the FDA, from manufacturers including Covidien LP, EV3, Inc, Terumo Corporation, Merit Medical Systems, Inc..

How do I buy long floppy tip guidewires outside the United States?

Open a product and use Where to buy: it lists the manufacturer's website, contact and distributor pages and any reps who cover your country. Approvals such as the CE mark vary by country, so confirm availability with the manufacturer.

Where do these sizes come from?

From the FDA Global Unique Device Identification Database, which lists every model and its labeled sizes. Attributes such as coating or covering come from the FDA text, the manufacturer's own pages, or the manufacturer directly; always confirm with the instructions for use.

Is something missing or wrong?

Manufacturers can correct their products by claiming their company page. Anyone can send a sourcing request and we will look into it.

Sizes from the FDA Global Unique Device Identification Database (GUDID). Always confirm sizes, compatibility and approval in your country with the manufacturer's instructions for use.
