Frequently asked questions

How are angioplasty balloon sizes written?

As diameter x length in millimeters (for example 8 x 40 mm), plus the shaft or working length in centimeters and the guidewire it runs on (0.014, 0.018 or 0.035 inch). Longer shafts reach farther from the access site.

What is the difference between compliant and non-compliant balloons?

A compliant balloon keeps growing as pressure rises; a non-compliant balloon holds its labeled diameter even at high pressure, which suits resistant lesions such as dialysis access stenoses.

What is a drug-coated balloon (DCB)?

A balloon coated with a drug, usually paclitaxel, that is pressed into the vessel wall during angioplasty to reduce re-narrowing. Indications and approvals differ by device and country.

How do I buy non-compliant pta balloons outside the United States?

Where do these sizes come from?

From the FDA Global Unique Device Identification Database, which lists every model and its labeled sizes. Attributes such as coating or covering come from the FDA text, the manufacturer's own pages, or the manufacturer directly; always confirm with the instructions for use.

Is something missing or wrong?

Manufacturers can correct their products by claiming their company page. Anyone can send a sourcing request and we will look into it.
